How To Pay Your Utility Bills
Determining what kind of apartment you can afford is extremely important when factoring this into your apartment search.  Don’t get yourself in over your head.  So its worth your time to take into consideration your income and expenses before you sign on the dotted line. We have included some simple steps that will outline how to determine what you can afford to may for rent on a monthly basis.

Figure Out What Your Income Is

Determining your actual income after taxes will be the most pertinent factor when figuring out your maximum rental payments per month. Many apartment communities will actually have rules that require you to make a certain amount of income in order to qualify to become a resident. Its expensive to have to evict someone.  You should really pay no more than 28% of your income towards rent.

What Are Your Expenses

Many people simply don’t know what they are spending each month. Its hard to quantify these numbers if you don’t have a hard budget you stick with.  Get out a notepad and write down all of your fixed costs that you pay on a monthly basis.  This should include cell phone bills, cable, insurance, car payments, and your current rental amount.  And for other expenses like clothing and savings you will create another number.

Then there are other expenses that will vary from one month to the next. These will include entertainment, gas, repairs, and other miscellaneous items. You also will want to have a budget for emergency situations that might include a doctors visit or plane ticket.

Crunch The Numbers

Now you can take your income and subtract the expenses from it.  You will want to have at lease 10 percent of that come out with a positive number.  If that number is closer, then you will have to make adjustments with your expenses.  You can start by looking for better deals on credit card interest rates, insurance, and even phone plans.

Start Searching

Now its time to start apartment hunting. Neighborhoods, property age, and square footage will determine rents. If you find yourself not able to come up with many choices, you will need to make compromises.
