How To Deal With A Bad Neighbor
Dealing with bad neighbors is everyones worst nightmare. And although we may absolutely love the apartment we have decided to lease, you may find yourself in an unfortunate situation. And we absolutely have no control of who our neighbors may be.  If someone took your morning paper from your doorstep or parked in your parking space, you will find yourself in a pickle.  But before you completely lose it and consider moving, we have outlined some techniques that may go a long way in resolving your situation.

This may take a bad situation and make it much more bearable.

Talk First

The easiest and quickest way to resolve a situation is by having an adult conversation. You may even find that your neighbor is completely agreeable and apologizes.  The majority of people will try and avoid conflict.  Start and explain your situation as calmly as possible. If you start out by making accusations and are extremely hostile, you probably won’t get the desired reaction you were looking for. Of course if your neighbor is making lots of noise at 2 AM and you have finals the next day, its hard to stay calm. But you must.

Take Notes

Start by writing down exactly what is occurring that is bothering you. If you keep a detailed list of everything that is causing you issues this may go a long way if your situation escalates. It will also help you when your having a face to face conversation. Many times we forget what we need to say when we are having an in depth conversation.

And if your first attempt does not solve any issues, its time to write a letter detailing the gravity of the situation. This should state the nature of the situations, what has occurred, what you have tried to do to resolve the problems, and what type of response your neighbor gave you. Be sure and make sure your neighbor gets a copy.

Third Party Assistance

If your neighbor does not agree to any of your requests, its time to take your case to a higher power. Remember that landlords and management companies have to resolve issues like these all the time.  Many times if your neighbor is acting a certain way that is a disturbance, they may be violating the terms of their lease.

Or see if other neighbors are experiencing the same issues. Having more people on your side sure does go a long way.
